Last night, we held a Throwback Prom as a way to honor all of our incredible ministry volunteers who truly make the difference each and every week at The Connection Church. The prom was completely free and everyone was welcome to bring a guest. Because it was Throwback, everyone got to choose their favorite decade. People wore outfits that ranged from the ridiculously fun to classy sophisticated. We even saw both Dumb and Dumber in bright orange and blue tuxes.

The staff worked hard this week to make this a memorable night and it really was a night we’ll never forget! Along with a team of volunteers, they made corsages and boutonnières for all of our prom-goers. They also set out a tasty spread of food and hosted tables with specific decades that went all the way back to the 1920s!

One of our groups went all out and showed up in a limo. I was surprised to find out that this was actually the first prom many people had ever attended. For others, it became a sort of “second chance” prom to do it even better than when they were in high school.

The dances included the limbo, which was won by Angel Samaniego, and a Soul Train style dance line where people showed off their incredibly smooth moves. Many couples requested their song including Stryper’s hair metal ballad “Honestly,” which went out to Jen Williams from Trey Williams. I even got in a dance with my Princess Pam with a love song from Cinderella.

For those who don’t dance, we had a photo scavenger hunt where you could find specific people and things around the campus and capture them with your camera.

One of the highlights of the night was a surprise marriage proposal from Stan Webb to Becky Frammolino. Thankfully, she said Yes! That moment reminded us of how great it is to be a part of a family that shares these big life markers together.

Everyone got to vote for the Prom Court and the winners were chosen randomly from the votes that were cast. The cutest couple was Glen and Gloria Navarro. The best dressed honor went to the stunning Hortencia Gutierrez. The Best Dancer award went to Frankie Mendoza. Our Prom Queen was Charlene Allmon and Prom King was Victor Torres, or as he was called on his ballot, the “mullet wig guy.”

The last dances included a touching moment for dads of daughters with Steven Curtis Chapman’s “Cinderella,” followed by Donna Summer’s quintessential closer “Last Dance.” Everyone left with big smiles and unforgettable memories of this night to remember.

For anyone who missed out and wants to be a part of awesome events like this in the future, I want to invite you to join the team and you’ll be invited next time too. Just check out this link to let us know how you’d like to serve.

I want to give a huge thank you to Carissa and Chris from Hoopes Photography who took prom portraits! They’re always so ready to help us out with photos! You can see the pics they took on our flickr site, along with the candid shots that Bethanie took.
