Pam and I got to experience the new U2 3D movie at the IMAX
in Austin. Here’s
the recap:

  • There was an incredibly diverse audience, from much older folks to little kids. Some of them, I’m thinking, “you must have thought this was The Alamo.”
  • The film was beautifully shot with amazing effects! In some ways, watching this film was better than being there because of the angles you get to view from.
  • It occurred to me that all major concerts are done portable, like us.
  • The surround sound was at full concert volume.
  • Those 3D glasses are still annoying and make everyone look goofy.
  • It was taken from a concert in Buenos Aires, Argentina and it seemed like a sea of people attended.
  • I loved the musical transitions! That’s one of the elements that makes them excel.
  • It would have been better if our live audience had been more interactive.
  • It raised the question in my mind: How do you preach so loudly without preaching? The gospel was present, especially in the closing moments with Yahweh.
  • Another theme of the concert was COEXIST: Why isn’t it possible for Jews, Muslims and Christians to live peacefully on this planet together?
  • The message was delivered clearly through the sequence of the songs, which led me to think, “Has this been Bono’s master plan since day 1?”

Overall, it was well worth the time and money. It’s going to be shown at nights for the next month, so there’s still time to catch it. However, no popcorn is allowed. I can think
of a few other concerts that would be great in this format.

Which ones would
you suggest?
